How, when his first novel La Vie et demi was published by Editions du Seuil in 1979, the young Sony Labou Tansi, born in Kimzanza, a little village on the banks of the Loya, a tributary of the Congo, became a man of the theatre, a writer of international repute, a leading model for a whole generation, a major reference in the social, political and intellectual life of the continent, and a key player in the world of Francophonia, until he died from AIDS on 14 June 1995.
