The land one never returns to is the land of one’s childhood and one’s youth that one left and to which one imagined going back one day. And when the day to return comes, if it ever does, it’s no longer a question of going back, but of tearing oneself away. The land one never returns to here is Portugal, but it could be Turkey, Algeria, Mali or Chile. Wherever one comes from, wherever one goes, one never emigrates with impunity.
