The young Ghan lives with his family in the Mongolian steppe near Oulan Bator. He is about to turn thirteen. Descended from a long line of bards, his father intends to teach him his people's history, so that one day, he will become its embodiment. To complete his training, he learns to ride horses so that he may participate in the Nadaam, the Mongolian national celebration. In following Ghan in his passage from childhood to adulthood, we learn the fundamental values of Mongolian culture - from its founding epic of Gengis Khan to its intimate relationship to nature. In turn, we discover the unsurpassable art of the epic diphonic song of the bards of Gengis Khan.
